How to Remove Pet Hair from Carpets and Rugs

If you are lucky enough to own a pet dog or cat, you’ll know that their hair gets everywhere.

Regular vacuum cleaning using a machine designed to pick up pet hair is ideal.

The sheer volume of hair however means that it often gets embedded in carpets and rugs; so what can you do to shift it?

There are a number of additional measures you can take:

1. Rubbing a balloon along the carpet creates static electricity which attracts the hair.

2. Sprinkle the floor with a light coating of baking soda and then vacuum. This will also help remove any unpleasant smells from the fibres.

3. Check the carpet manufacturers care instructions to see if you can use water for cleaning. If so fill a spray bottle with fabric softener and water (one part softener to three parts water) and spray a light mist over the carpet. Colour test on an inconspicuous area first. Do not over wet the carpet, then vacuum with a cleaner designed for use on wet surfaces.

4. For smaller areas, such as rugs or parts of the carpet your pet likes to sit on regularly, put on a pair of rubber gloves and wet lightly. Run your hands over the area a number of times to pick up the hairs.
